  • He is a cancer survivor and was diagnosed with acute leukemia (blood cancer) while shooting for the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Tumsa Nahin Dekha in 2004. Such was his dedication that Basu supervised the direction of the film while receiving treatment from his hospital bed.
  • When he was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2004, doctors said that he had only 2 weeks left to live. His wife was also pregnant at that time.
  • He teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor to launch the production house Picture Shuru Productions in 2013.
  • His box office smash-hit Barfi! was nominated as the official selection for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ at the 85th Academy Awards. However, it failed to be shortlisted in the final top 5 list.
